Analytical chemists might even work for the companies that manufacture the instruments used in the labs. Because professionals in this field are trained to follow procedures and protocols, analytical chemists make good quality assurance specialists.

Analytical chemists will obviously need a solid background in general chemistry but will also need knowledge of other chemical disciplines, such as organic, polymer, inorganic and environmental chemistry. A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for this field. However, a master's degree or higher will help analytical chemists offset the high level of competition for jobs. Because this is a service-oriented discipline, meaning the profession solves problems for others, courses in business and management skills are important.

But just because a lab is not state of the art does not mean the science conducted in one is less meaningful. A less sophisticated lab might be appropriate for the purpose at hand. Professionals in this field might also work in manufacturing or as sales and marketing chemists for instrumentation vendors. In fact, about 42 percent of all professionals in this field worked in manufacturing firms in 2008.
