What Is Tylenol ER?

Tylenol(r), one of many over-the-counter pain relief medications, is offered in several strengths and forms. From flavored liquids in children's doses to multi-layered gelcaps, Tylenol(r) brand pain relief is available to treat many different ailments, and the recent addition of extended-release pills has expanded the Tylenol(r) brand even further.

  1. Acetaminophen

    • Tylenol(r) is a trade name for acetaminophen, a medication used for pain relief (analgesics) and fever reduction (antipyretics). Acetaminophen is often used in conjunction with aspirin and caffeine for migraine headaches, as together they are much more powerful against the ailment than any single ingredient.

    Types of Tylenol

    • Tylenol is available as Rapid Release(r) gels, tablets, caplets, orally dissolving tablets (Meltaways(r)) and liquid. The liquid for adults is for cough, congestion and sore throat, while the liquid for children is for fever reduction and aches and pains. Similarly, the Tylenol(r) Meltaways(r) are also antipyretic and analgesic in nature. Arthritis Relief, Regular Strength, Extra Strength and Tylenol(r) PM are all available in different forms of pills, with both 8-Hour Relief and Arthritis Relief produced as an Extended Release (ER) pill with two layers to ensure longer-lasting relief.

    Tylenol Extended Release

    • The Tylenol(r) Extended Release formula uses "a special bi-layer design has one layer that dissolves quickly for fast pain relief and a second time-released layer that offers continuous relief," according to the description on the Tylenol(r) website. In the case of the Arthritis Pain ER pill, the coating also does not create stomach irritability, an advantage over other arthritis pain management medications.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of acetaminophen use are rare but include light-headedness and potential trembling and pain in the side or lower back. Rare side effects of acetaminophen use "include yellow skin or eyes, unusual bleeding or bruising, weakness, fatigue, bloody or black stools, bloody or cloudy urine, and a sudden decrease in the amount of urine," according to Arthritis-Symptoms.com. Acetaminophen overdose can cause severe liver damage and is marked by nausea, vomiting and sweating, as well as exhaustion.

    Availability

    • Tylenol(r) in many, if not all, varieties is available at drugstores, supermarkets and discount stores. It can also be found online via the Tylenol(r) website, online pharmacies and drugstores, and the online counterparts of supermarkets. Sites such as Amazon.com also sell Tylenol(r) products.
