The Difference Between the Canon Rebel XS & the XSi
Canon’s line of Rebel EOS SLR cameras provide professional quality images at a consumer level price. Canon makes four Rebel models. The XS and XSi are the two older models in the line-up. The differences between these cameras are subtle, but the XSi offers a few improved features for photography hobbyists.

Megapixels
-
The biggest difference between the XS and the XSi is megapixels. The XS features 10 megapixels. The XSi features 12 megapixels. One megapixel equals one million pixels. The difference is not very large, but you will be able to print larger images and make pictures with a higher resolution.
LCD Screen
-
Another difference between these cameras is the LCD screen. The both feature an LCD screen on the back of the camera that allows you to view and change camera settings. Live View is available on both models, which displays the potential image on the LCD instead of looking through the viewfinder. The LCD screen on the XS is 2.5 inches diagonally and 3.0 inches on the XSi.

Auto Focus
-
Both cameras feature a similar auto focus mode. The auto focus on the XS features seven focus points. The camera automatically picks seven varied points in the image to focus on, which ensures multiple aspects of the scene will be in focus. The XSi features nine focus points, which enables the photographer to carry the focus onto multiple subjects scattered around a scene.
Size

The appearance of both cameras is similar, but they are different sizes. The XS is smaller and weighs 15.9 ounces. The XSi is a bit larger, since it features the larger LCD screen, and weighs 16.8 ounces.
Price
-
Both of these cameras occupy different niches within Canon’s SLR line-up. The XS retails for $499 for the camera body and the XSi retails for $549. Both cameras can be purchased as a kit with Canon's EFS 18-55 IS lens for $549 and $649, respectively.
