USPS salaries range drastically.

The United States Postal Service employed more than 8.4 million people in 2010, making it the second-largest civilian employer. As such, it is one of the few agencies to have workers in every community in the United States. USPS employees help process and deliver 584 million pieces of mail throughout the country each business day.

  1. Job

    • Salaries within the U.S. Postal Service vary among jobs. Those working as postmaster or mail superintendents have some of the highest salaries with a median of $72,600, according to a April 2010 report by Payscale.com. Those working as customer service supervisors and electronics technicians have median salaries around $61,000. USPS workers employed as postal service mail carriers and postal service clerks have median salaries around $51,000, while those working as mail processing clerks have a median salary of $50,800.

    Experience

    • Experience is also a determinant of one's salary at the USPS. Veteran employees with 20 or more years of experience have the highest median salary of $59,500, according to PayScale.com in April 2010. Those with 10 to 19 years of experience have a median salary of $55,400 while those with five to nine years of experience have a median salary of $52,700. USPS workers with four or fewer years of experience have median salaries around $50,000, PayScale.com reports.

    Education

    • Salaries vary based on an individual's level of education. Though you can work for the USPS with only a high school diploma, median salaries for this level were $50,500 in April 2010, according to the PayScale.com report. Employees with an Associate of Science or an Associate of Applied Science degree earned around $53,000. Those who possess a Bachelor of Science degree in business management earned considerably higher pay: median annual salaries of $72,300 in April 2010.

    Industry

    • Jobs with the U.S. Postal Service fall within various industries. Those working for government or public services had some of the highest median salaries in April 2010: $68,205 and $67,931, respectively, according to PayScale.com. Those working in customer service solutions had a median salary of $65,200. Those in shipping/transportation, warehousing, logistics or distribution had a median salary of $60,800. USPS workers in the direct mail sector had some of the lowest reported salaries, with median annual wages of $53,400.

    Benefits

    • Along with competitive salaries, USPS workers receive generous benefits. These include health insurance, life insurance and a retirement plan. These benefits are offered through federal programs established specifically for federal employees. USPS workers also receive vacation and sick days. Another perk of working for the USPS is that the Postal Service is closed for 10 days each year, which may mean time off over holidays.
