Fire Exit Signs

Fire exit signs are often red and white and show a person running from a fire. These signs are placed at exit locations throughout buildings to assist staff and visitors in the evacuation process if a fire happens. Federal, state and regional regulations require public buildings to have fire exit signs posted in lit areas to ensure the safety of everyone in the building. Fire exit signs should not be covered objects and should be easily seen. Many companies show these signs to new employees and explain ways of exiting the building in the event of a fire.

The United States Department of Labor suggests that portable fire extinguishers be placed in various locations throughout the building, as well as keeping one in the home. No smoking signs appear not only in areas where smoking is not preferred, but also appear in flammable locations, such as at gas pumps. These signs are often shown by a red crossed out circle over a cigarette, or a sign that says "No Smoking." These signs are to be taken seriously. Never smoke a cigarette in a flammable area. These areas can become engulfed in flames very quickly with only the smallest flame. These signs should be placed in all flammable areas.

A flammable sign is often represented by a flame symbol or the word "Flammable." These signs are posted in flammable areas. Many items, such as alcoholic beverages and polyester materials also have a small flammable emblem on them. These items should be kept away from very high temperatures and fire.
Sign Colors

Fire safety signs come in various colors, each having a meaning. Red means danger, prohibition or is for fire fighting equipment. Green is used for emergency equipment or escape route signs. Blue means mandatory, such as a type of equipment that should be worn in a particular situation. Yellow is for warnings and precautions.
