Girdle Vs. Athletic Supporter

Athletes have to take great care of their bodies. Stretching and training are two important parts of the formula, but a third part is wearing the proper equipment. Two popular pieces of athletic equipment are the athletic girdle and the athletic supporter. While these pieces of equipment are often worn in tandem, they are two separate things.

  1. Girdle

    • The word girdle is used to refer to a garment that encircles the hips like a belt. Non-athletic girdles are worn by both genders to help shape the body in a way similar to a corset, but athletic girdles are meant to provide protection to the athlete. The girdle is made of a stretchy, elastic fabric that is meant to hug the athlete from the hips down to just above the knees. It's intent is to protect and support the groin, hamstrings and quadriceps.

    Athletic Supporter

    • An athletic supporter is for male athletes. An athletic supporter is an elastic band that stretches between an athlete's legs to provide support and protection for the genitals. When worn by itself, an athletic supporter looks similar to garments worn by ancient peoples for sporting events.

    Combination

    • Often an athletic supporter is attached to a girdle. The girdle provides a solid belt, and the athletic supporter hooks to the girdle in the front and rear. The fabric of the athletic supporter, when combined with the added strength of the girdle, cradle the genitals so that they aren't injured during strenuous activity such as running or jumping.

    Other Names

    • These two pieces of athletic equipment have had other names over the years. A girdle may be referred to as a marble if it's going to be worn by a male for instance. An athletic supporter is more commonly referred to as a jock strap, or sometimes a cup even though a cup is something else entirely.

    Cup

    • A cup is a piece of athletic protection that is worn with a jockstrap. A cup is a rounded, molded piece of plastic or metal alloy that goes inside of an athletic supporter and provides a barrier so that an athlete's genitals aren't injured if they're struck either accidentally or on purpose.
