Clean floors make a healthier home.

Cleaning the house is among the many tasks you perform to create a healthy environment. In doing so, you want to be sure the products you're using don't contain any harmful chemicals that might be dangerous for any member of the family, including pets. According to Swiffer News, "all Swiffer products are safe to use around children and pets--a fact confirmed by independent scientists, veterinarians, and the ASPCA." Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pet-Safe

    • In 2004, the safety of Swiffer's cleaning solution came into question when a pet owner claimed the dog had died from liver failure after exposure and possible ingestion of the solution. With Swiffer under scrutiny and the health of children and pets alike in question, veterinary toxicologists at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center reviewed the case and found the allegations "unfounded," saying, "these ingredients are safe to use around pets when used according to label directions."

    Ingredients

    • The most prevalent ingredient in the Swiffer Wet Jet solution is water--90 to 100 percent. The other ingredients, propylene glycol n-propyl ether and propylene glycol n-butyl ether are "very safe ingredients at levels used in cleaning products," according to the ASPCA. The cleaning solution also contains isopropyl alcohol.

    Potential Health Hazards

    • According to the Consumer Product Information Database, accidental oral ingestion of the cleaning solution could cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Getting the solution in your eyes will cause irritation similar to a mild soap. It can cause skin irritation and exacerbate already irritated skin or extremely dry skin. Inhalation can cause slight mucous membrane irritation as well. However, the product is not carcinogenic and no chronic health effects have been reported.

    First Aid

Swiffer's Material Safety Data Sheet recommends drinking a glass of water if you have ingested a small amount of the cleaning solution. Move to a well-ventilated room or step outside for some fresh air if you have inhaled this product. If you get the solution in your eyes, continuously rinse them for 15 to 20 minutes; remove contacts after the first five minutes of rinsing, and continue rinsing for 10 to 15 more minutes. Wash your skin with soap and water if there is any contact; the same applies for clothing. If you have additional concerns, contact the American Association of Poison Control Centers: 800-222-1222.

Taking a few precautionary measures and following packaging instructions can help you avoid problems with Swiffer cleaning solution. Keep all cleaning supplies away from children, and attach child locks on cabinet doors where these supplies are kept. Always follow the manufacturer's directions, use the recommended amount prescribed. Remember that pets are curious, too. Allow freshly cleaned floors to dry completely before letting pets or children back into the area.
