Mature Dating Etiquette
Many people do not expect to find themselves on the dating scene after they have reached a certain age in their adult lives. If you are coming out of a long-term relationship or if you have denied yourself this type of social interaction, dating can seem like you have placed yourself in a foreign land with unfamiliar rules. However, many of the dating etiquette rules from when you were young still apply.
-
Be Yourself
-
When dating, make sure a person likes you for whom you truly are. It is hard for a dating partner to appreciate you fully if you are not completely honest about yourself. Dropping your guard and removing your masks will ensure your dates are more enjoyable and comfortable and will build your relationship on trust.
Leave Old Relationships in the Past
-
It is normal for a dating partner to be curious about your past relationships. However, this is not an invitation to rant constantly about past partners. When dating, only talk about past relationships if your dating partner brings up the subject or if you have an intentional conversation about the subject planned. Bringing up the past could make your partner feel like she does not measure up to those with whom you had relationships in the past or as if you are using them to vent your insecurities. Focus on the present and on the person you are dating now.
-
Mind Your Body Language
-
As a person ages, he picks up communication habits that are expressed in his body language. Evaluate your body language and be mindful of those considered negative. Crossed arms, not maintaining eye contact and turning up your nose can make you appear not interested in your dating partner. Do not risk misinterpretations and try to use body language that is open and friendly and makes you appear interested.
Avoid Negativity
-
Be aware of your speech in everyday conversations. Those who have a tendency to point out the negative before the positive, try to find ways to improve upon what other have done without solicitation or have a tendency to let their perceptions rule their decisions may find their relationships not surviving past the first few dates. Part of dating etiquette is having a positive outlook towards yourself and others. Positive people are more fun to be around and make their dating partners feel secure and unafraid of being secretly judged.
Be Inclusive
-
If you have been dating a person for more than a month or so, include your partner's family in your plans and affections. For example, if it is the holiday season, give your partner's grandchildren holiday treats as well as your own. In addition, always keep in mind your partner has a family she would like to spend time with and you will have to compromise when it comes to family event-planning and traditions.
