What Is the Difference Between Remy Hair and Yaki Hair?

Remy hair and Yaki hair refer to different types of hair used in hair weaves, extensions, wigs and hairpieces. While Remy hair refers to a specific harvesting process, Yaki hair refers to the texture resembling relaxed Afro-Caribbean hair. Remy hair is cut from a single donor, cuticles intact, and all hairs facing same direction from root to tip. Yaki hair, in contrast, may be Remy, non-Remy, or synthetic.

Definition of Remy Hair

Remy hair is defined as human hair from a single donor in which cuticles are kept intact and hairs are organized facing the same direction from root to tip. The hair cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair that provides a protection to the hair. Intact cuticles lay flat, allowing for a reflective surface, which provides a shiny appearance.

How Remy Hair Is Harvested

To assure hair strands are organized facing the same direction from root to tip, Remy hair must be cut close to the scalp in a ponytail. Hair is then collected and cleaned with detergent to remove any lice, hair products or dirt. Workers may sure all hair strands are facing the same direction.

Types of Remy Hair

Remy hair can be divided into several subcategories. Remy hair can be virgin, unprocessed or processed, which means it has been colored, permed or relaxed. As long as the cuticle remains intact, the hair is still considered Remy. Remy hair is either single drawn, which means hair strands may be different lengths, or double drawn, which means all strands are the same length.

Definition of Yaki Hair

Yaki hair, in contrast, refers to the processed texture in which hair resembled chemically relaxed hair. Yaki hair may be from a synthetic, Remy or non-Remy source. Non-Remy hair is collected from various sources rather than from a single donor. Cuticles are usually destroyed prior to processing. However, the best quality Yaki hair is from Remy hair.

Types of Yaki Hair

Yaki hair, while defined as having the texture of chemically relaxed Afro Caribbean hair, is available in four variations. Silky or Straight Yaki hair looks like hair that has been relaxed and flat-ironed. Regular Yaki looks like relaxed hair but is not as silky as the Silky version. Kinky Yaki hair resembles hair that has not been chemically relaxed but has been blown straight. Kinky Yaki is more natural looking and usually has a thicker texture. Coarse Yaki resembles untreated Afro Caribbean hair and may be Wavy Coarse or Curly Coarse.
