A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline is the minimum education requirement. Professional Responsibilities

A security consultant is responsible for implementing and managing an information encryption system for a client firm. The consultant must interview various heads of departments with the client firm to determine the company's specific needs. Once a security plan is designed, it is implemented and maintained by the security consultant's firm. Periodic server maintenance and research on increasing data security is a part of the daily job function. A security consultant may also work with other IT project managers to ensure that operating costs are within the client firm's budget.
Technical Knowledge

Extensive knowledge in data encryption, design and maintenance of databases is necessary. In particular, the security consultant must have knowledge of performance tuning views, indexes, SQL and PLSQL. The most basic programming languages required are C++, scripting, HTML and web-based languages.
The security consultant must have knowledge of virus and worm defense and designing a WiFi security system.

Education and Prior Experience

A bachelor's degree in information systems, management information systems or computer science is required. The most competitive job applicants would have specific data encryption training or certification from the International Association of Professional Security Consultants. To garner certification, the applicant must have three years of security experience, complete classroom training and obtain a satisfactory passing score on the certification exam. Prior experience in security intelligence, data encryption, analytics or information management systems is required.
