Computer hardware engineers create new computer systems and equipment

Computer hardware engineers work on the physical components of computer systems, from planning the system concept through fabricating the prototype parts for installation. Many of the computers advances the public enjoys are due to the research and development of computer equipment created by computer hardware engineers. Computer engineers have to be mindful of expense and cost of constructing computer systems for use by the average consumer, business and government outlets.

  1. Educational Requirements

    • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering is typically required for employment in this occupation. Entry-level positions may sometimes filled by individuals with sufficient computer related experience. Individuals intending to pursue higher-level management positions will need training in business management and administration as well as further technical training in computer sciences and theory.

    Job Duties

    • Computer hardware engineers work to develop, design, test and research computer hardware components. Most of the advances in computer technology are a direct result to the work performed by computer hardware engineers. These engineers are responsible for developing, designing, testing and installing new computer system and computer related parts and equipment. Engineers work to improve keyboards, circuit cards, memory chips, routers and all the other physical parts required to operate computers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, work conducted by computer hardware engineers is very similar to that of electronic engineers who design and test electronic components, however the job duties of the computer hardware engineers are specific to the development and design of computer systems.

    Working Environment

    • Computer hardware engineers usually work in comfortable offices or laboratories due in part to necessary climate controlled environments requirements of electronic components. Engineers may experience long hours and tight deadlines depending on the nature of the project. Typically, development and design planning schedules allow for experimentation and testing of prototype models of potential equipment.

    Employment Outlook

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of computer hardware engineers employed in May 2008 totaled 74,700. The agency projects an increase in employment opportunities by an estimated 11 percent from 2008 to 2018. This growth will be slower in comparison to all other occupations due primarily to the increased practice by companies to outsource more work to domestic and foreign design firms. The agency reports that intense foreign competition will adversely affect potential employment opportunities. The majority of the projected employment growth will occur in the field of computer system design and related services.

    Earnings:

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer hardware engineers earned approximately $100,800 in median annual income for the period of May 2008. Earnings and advancement are subject to seniority, experience and continued educations. Additional benefits packages usually include such rewards as paid holidays, sick leave and vacations, stock options and bonuses.
