Payroll Supervisor Job Description
The payroll department in any company processes the paychecks and time sheets for every employee in the organization. Workers in the payroll department process tax information, deductions for health benefits and retirement savings. The payroll department is where employees sign up for direct deposit and find information on tax withholdings and questions regarding paychecks.

The function of the payroll supervisor is to direct the activities of workers involved in processing employee paychecks. Supervisors manage the employees working in the department and ensure that the department follows company policy, procedures and tax law when paying workers.
Job Duties

The supervisor hires and trains employees working in the payroll department. He performs employee evaluations, plans work schedules and promotes employees in the department.
Payroll supervisors are responsible for the accuracy of paychecks, deductions and tax data in the department. The supervisor of the payroll department oversees all of the activities in the processing of paychecks and payroll data, including court-ordered deductions.
Supervisors ensure that tax payments are sent to the appropriate state and federal agencies. Duties include the overseeing of year-end payroll processing and issuing of W-2 forms to employees.
Lower-level payroll supervisors work alongside workers processing employee paychecks.

Payroll supervisors must have accounting skills and knowledge of tax regulations. Supervisors should have the ability to lead others in the payroll department. Written and verbal communications skills are necessary in the position.
The supervisor of a payroll department should be familiar with payroll software and procedures used for processing employee paychecks.
Education and Qualifications

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in accounting for a payroll supervisor position. Three to five years of payroll experience may be required for the position, as well. Some employers may require an associate degree as the minimal qualification for the position of supervisor, according to Accounting Jobs Today.
