Car Sales Person Job Description
A car sales person, or a sales consultant, career is one that is very easy to get into but may prove to be hard to stay in. The hours are long but the money can bring a person with no college degree a six-figure yearly income. On the other hand, a mediocre sales person may see much less of an income. Job duties remain consistent for a sales consultant from dealer to dealer, but may differ slightly depending on type of dealer.

Selling Skills
-
Sales are the most important part of a sales consultant's job description. You will meet and greet customers and determine what their needs are to sell them a car from your inventory. You will have to have basic sales skills, such as a likable personality. You will need to listen to what your customer wants and show him why your vehicle meets all of his needs.
Product Knowledge
-
If working for a new car dealer, you will have to become certified in the manufacturer's product line on a yearly basis. You will be responsible for using your knowledge to demonstrate a vehicle to a customer and answer her questions. You will also need to be familiar with other makes and models for used car inventory or competitors' products to make your sale. You will show your customer how to use the vehicle she purchases upon delivery and you will have to take phone calls to answer questions. Product knowledge also involves staying current with pricing, incentives, rebates, leasing programs and MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail pricing).
-
Paperwork
-
You will become current on credit requirements, credit application regulations, DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) procedures, required paperwork and banking stipulations. You will fill out buyers' orders with proper taxes and fees included double check VIN's (vehicle identification number) to ensure that all paperwork is filled out correctly. You will also be responsible for properly filling out any manufacturer's required new product information sheets at the time of delivery.
Service and Detail Relations
-
You will have to deal with the service and detail department on a regular basis. You will make sure that your sold vehicle is inspected and that all customer concerns, such as loose or missing parts, are taken care of. You will be responsible for taking the vehicle to the detail department and checking to make sure that the vehicle looks good once it is prepared for delivery. You are entirely responsible for the overall condition of the vehicle before it is presented to the customer for pick up.
Follow Up Procedures
-
You will be expected to follow up with your customers three days after delivery, 30 days after delivery and every few months afterward. You will most likely be required to put your followup information in a computer tracking system that the dealer monitors.
Lot and Showroom Activity
-
Sales consultants will help to move vehicles around the lot and help to keep it clean. Many will be responsible for making sure here is enough gas for a test drive or take cars to detail if the cars have become dirty from weather. If at a new car dealership, inventory will have to be rotated, meaning that once a new car is sold another one must be put in its place. Every month that a new sales event comes out by the manufacturer, the sales people will use large signs, sales stickers and other marketing items to decorate the inside and outside of the showroom.
