Caribbean Topaz Information

Caribbean topaz, also called mystic fire topaz, is a lab-created gemstone that features prominently in designer pendants, earrings, rings and bracelets. This multi-colored gem is durable enough for day-to-day wear, yet glamorous enough for special occasions. Caribbean topaz is a distinctive gem that adds colorful sparkle to any fashion ensemble.

  1. Color

    • Unlike natural topazes, which come in single colors that include pink, blue, orange and brown, the Caribbean topaz is a multi-colored gemstone that can combine many different colors in the same stone.

    Creation

    • Lab technicians create Caribbean topaz through the application of a thin layer of titanium to the underside of a cut clear topaz. Pure topaz is completely colorless; titanium causes light to refract through it in such a way as to produce the variety of colors that we see in the Caribbean topaz.

    Origin

    • The white topaz that labs typically use to create the Caribbean topaz exists primarily in Asian locations, with large deposits in Pakistan, Japan, Myanmar and China. There are also mines in Afghanistan, Russia and Sri Lanka.

    History

    • In 1998, Azotic Coating Technology, Inc. patented the process of creating Caribbean topazes. While the stones do not come from the Caribbean, they were named after the region's vivid colors, according to JamaicaTourist.net

    Significance

    • According to GemAffair.com, Caribbean topaz has several mystical properties. Like all topaz, it is associated with courage and invisibility, and wearing is thought to improve eyesight and clear upper respiratory infections. It is also thought to be a guard against poison and to act as a guide, helping the wearer discern her true life path.
