What Type of Summer Dress Flatters a Full Figure?
Summer is a time to show off a little more skin with light and airy fashions, and nothing says light and airy like a summer dress. Unfortunately, many full-figured women often feel most self-conscious wearing dresses that can reveal bodily imperfections. However, some dress styles flatter full figures and disguise problem areas particularly well.

Design
-
Women with full figures should look for dress designs that accentuate the positives and draw attention away from the negatives, such as a large waist or bulky hips. Summer dresses with an empire waist, like the popular baby doll dress, can hide an imperfect midsection or bulky hips because the waist sits up high---just below the bust---and fabric flows outward from there. A-line dresses fit close to the body up top and then flare gradually outward. This means that they don't hug the waist and hips. Dresses that have fabric wrapping around the middle, sarong-style, also effectively disguise unsightly bulges and rolls. Halter-top dresses are another style to look for, as they attract attention up to the bust and away from the midsection.
Fabrics
-
Full-figured women looking for a summer dress should pay close attention to fabric. Fabrics that cling to the body will usually only highlight problem areas. Avoid anything with spandex. Rather, look for flowy fabrics such as cotton, linen and chiffon. Not only will they help disguise unwanted curves, but they will give you an airy, carefree look.

Color
-
The same color principle that applies to other types of clothing also applies to summer dresses. Wearing darker colors on the bottom than you wear on the top will make you look slimmer. Thus, look for two-tone dresses that have a lighter colored bust. You don't have to wear dark grays and blacks. Look for dark but vibrant hues such as purple and turquoise.
Prints
-
Solid dresses are not a whole lot of fun to look at; thus, the eye will be drawn to the body's shape. Wearing large floral prints will give the eye something to focus on aside from the shape of your body. Besides helping to disguise problem areas, floral prints will give you a romantic, summery look.
Length
-
While summer dresses come in all lengths, full-figured women should opt for shorter summer dresses. By showing some leg, you will appear taller and further detract attention from the midsection. Plus, shorter dresses create a flirty, fun look.
