Astral Travel for Beginners
According to the College of Metaphysical Studies, astral projection is a type of out-of-body experience (OOB or OOBE) in which the astral body temporarily leaves the physical body and can freely travel the universe. Astral projection can be done both intentionally and unintentionally. Some people believe that everyone astral projects while they are sleeping. However, astral projection is not based on any verifiable science, and there is no hard data to prove that it actually exists.

History
-
Astral projection can be traced back to Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Ancient Egyptians (3,000 to 5,000 years ago) knew about an astral body, which they called "ka," according to the Astral Projection and Astral Plane Research Project. The priests drew pictures of a subtle, light body leaving the physical body on temple walls. In Ancient Greece, there are references to the astral body in the writings of Plato, Herodotus, and other philosophers and historians of the time. There are also depictions of astral projection in the Temple of Eleusis in Greece.
Function
-
Those who want to learn how to astral project may want to visit places he normally wouldn't be able to travel to, or travel through time, reconnect with loved ones who have passed on, or communicate with spirit guides. Astral travelers may also wish to visit the Hall of Akashic Records, which holds all the memories of souls and serves as a database of information about one's lives, past, present and future, and is encoded in a nonphysical plane of existence.

Misconceptions
-
One misconception is that the physical body can be possessed or taken over by someone else when someone astral projects. Another is that an individual can be harmed or even die while she is on the astral plane. These are not true. While it is possible to encounter negative energies on the astral plane, if a traveler feels threatened or uncomfortable, all she needs to do is think of the body and she will be transported back there instantly. And since an "etheric" cord connects the physical and astral bodies, it would not be possible for anything else to enter the physical body.
Relaxing the Body
-
There are several techniques for astral projection, but the prerequisite for all of them is for the body to be completely relaxed. Hypnosis and meditation are good ways to help the body relax. There are also binaural beats, which is when "two coherent sounds of nearly similar frequencies are presented one to each ear with stereo headphones or speakers, [and] the brain integrates the two signals, producing a sensation of a third sound called the binaural beat," according to the Monroe Institute. You can also use progressive relaxation, which involves tensing and relaxing sets of muscles.
Entering the Vibrational State
-
The next step after relaxing the body is to enter the vibrational state. One way to do this is to focus on different points of the room, and draw lines of energy from the body to the different areas, and then pull the energy to the body. Once the vibrations start, it is important to control them. Try to start a wave of energy from the soles of the feet to the top of the head. Do not panic, because that will cause the vibrations to stop.
Exiting the Body
-
Once the body has entered the vibrational state, it is time to exit. Release a hand or foot, instead of trying to release the entire body. Focus on the hand or foot and allow it to make contact with the wall near the bed, or the dresser. It should go through the object. Return it to the physical body, and allow the body to return to normal.
From here, there are a couple of ways to exit the body. One is the "roll out" technique. In the vibrational state, try to roll over in the bed, but do not turn physically. Or imagine rocking from side to side. Either way, build up momentum until the astral body actually separates from the physical body.
Another technique is the "rope" technique, which may prove to be a little harder than the roll out technique. For this one, imagine that there is a thick rope hanging from the ceiling. Try to reach for the rope with invisible, or astral hands, and imagine the sensation of climbing it hand over hand. There may be a dizzy feeling, but it is best to ignore it. Just keep climbing, and eventually, the separation will happen.
