England School Uniform Policy & School Safety

School uniform policies in England keep a keen eye towards safety.

While schools in America may debate over whether or not to have a uniform policy in their schools, school uniforms are more the norm in England. The dress codes in English schools are meant not only to eliminate social issues between students though, but to help make the schools a safer place for the students while they learn.

  1. Identification

    • Each school in England has its own uniform and dress code. Therefore, in English schools, it is easy to identify students who attend the school as opposed to those who are trespassing or who simply don't belong.

    Community

    • The school uniform policies in England are also designed to foster a sense of school pride and community. If students take pride in their attendance, and they view being at school as something they want to do, they're less likely to cause trouble. The uniform code is just one part of an attempt to create such a community.

    Gangs

    • England has youth gangs just as America does. School uniform policies prevent students from causing a distraction by wearing gang colors or displaying other symbols that might cause violence to break out in the school. School uniform policies in England also prohibit jewelry and hairstyles that are considered "extreme."

    Shoes

    • Another safety concern addressed in English school uniform policies is the issue of students' shoes. Some school uniform policies state that shoes with high heels or platforms pose a danger to a student's health and safety, since accidents while wearing those types of shoes could lead to serious injury.

    Religion

    • In the interests of respect, most schools will allow students to bend the dress code in the name of religion. This could be a security concern, particularly when public opinion is running high against a certain group such as Muslims, Jews, Protestants or Catholics, depending on what's going on at the time. However, most schools are very good about providing for the religious needs of their students.
