How Can a 17-Year-Old Finish High School at Home?
High school is an exciting time for many students. For some, however, the traditional high school setting does not meet their needs. High school students who want to earn a degree at home have many options. Many online and distance high schools are accredited and provide a well-rounded curriculum. Moreover, a diploma from these high schools is accepted by many colleges.

Keystone High School

Keystone High School is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools and the Distance Education Training Council. The school offers three online high school programs. Students must comply with their local school district's rules for home schooling programs. To earn a diploma, students need 21 credits. Credits from other high schools can be transferred to Keystone, provided the school meets Keystone's transfer eligibility requirements. At least five credits must be taken at Keystone. To earn a diploma, a student must complete four credits each in English and social studies, three credits each of math and science, one credit in health and art or the humanities and five credits in elective courses. Courses are offered online and/or through a correspondence program. The price of a five-course package is $2,645 in 2010. Single courses start at $499.
Ashworth High School

Ashworth High School is accredited by the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, the Distance Education and Training Council and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Ashworth offers a high school diploma program and individual classes. Students can take classes online or via the school's correspondence program. Students complete each class at their own pace. Each course is worth one credit; 16 credits are needed for a general high school diploma. Students may be able to transfer credits from another high school. Monthly payments start at $29 in 2010. Students have the option of attending their graduation ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia.

American High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation. American has been in business for more than 100 years. It offers single classes and full-course degree programs. Alumni include celebrities Donny Osmond and Jessica Alba. America offers more than 70 self-paced courses. Students need 18 credits to graduate. Credit is given for classes taken at traditional high schools, with a few exceptions. One year of tuition is $589 in 2010. Tuition for a four-year high school program is $1,399.
Allied National High School

Allied National High School is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Courses taken at other high schools are transferable, with a few exceptions. The school's online classes are self-paced. Tuition is $475 in 2010, including books. Biology, chemistry and physics classes require an additional $230 lab fee. Students need 22 credits to receive their high school diploma.
Alpha Omega Academy

Alpha Omega Academy provides an alternative path to distance education for those seeking a Christian education. The school is accredited by the North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation. The school uses the Switched on Program (SOS) to teach students in grades 3 through 12 and requires placement tests. Students have up to one year to complete course work. Fees for a course using SOS are $391 per subject in 2010. Students must take math, history, geography, language arts and science to earn their high school diploma.
