The Meaning of New Windows in Feng Shui
Feng Shui is based on the principal that our lives are deeply affected by our physical and emotional environment. Master Larry Sang, Founder of the American Feng Shui Institute, teaches that by using natural elements and making practical environmental changes, people can improve upon their relationships, prosperity, and health. Windows are considered the "eyes of the home" and how they are utilized affects an individual's well being. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Shape
-
The shape of windows represents a certain element, thus inviting the characteristics of that element. A square or wide rectangular-shaped window signifies the earth and promotes stability. A round window promotes focus and determination. A tall, narrow window promotes communication and harmony. Octagonal and arched windows are considered good Feng Shui. All windows must be kept clean and free of cracks.
Placement
-
Windows should not be located near the corner of a room as this promotes the rapid loss of chi. If a window is near a corner, placing a plant there as well will at least slow it down. Feng Shui prefers windows that open outwards. Windows that open inwards will have adverse effects on health, finances and professional pursuits. If a window does open inward, block negative chi with an outward facing mirror or a round-leafed plant.

Skylights
-
Skylights are useful for bringing extra light and positive energy into the house but be careful where they are placed. Skylights are okay in the kitchen as long as they are far away from the stove. A skylight over a stove symbolizes a loss of chi through food. Skylights are allowed in bedrooms, as long as they are not directly over a bed. This will release valuable chi. Skylights should not be placed in the rooms of small children as they can invite feelings of exhaustion and uneasiness, as though the child is being watched.
Curtains
-
Open curtains during the day but keep them closed at night. Sunlight brings positive energy but leaving them open at night brings bad luck. They should open and close with ease. Curtains should cover the entire window and have enough fabric to reach the floor, creating pleats and folds in the fabric. Curtains that hang limply are considered bad Feng Shui. Choose heavy fabrics for winter and lighter ones for summer.
Colors
-
Choose colors that are appropriate for each season. Select white, gray, and metallic colors for autumn; blue shades for winter; green shades for spring; and red, orange, and pink for summer. You can also use the color of your curtains to correlate with the specific energy needed for each room. Bedrooms should include colors that induce love such as pink or green. Red promotes excitement and energy in the dining room. Orange and yellow are refreshing and revitalizing and therefore good in kitchens and play areas. Green is calming and ideal for living rooms. Purple enhances transformation and should be used for spiritual rooms.
