Types
-
Several types of portable spas and hot tubs are available. Inflatable hot tubs come with air pumps that inflate the rig within 15 minutes. After water is added, the heating units are activated. Another type of portable spa is composed of faux-wood panel siding that locks upright, yet folds flat when not in use. Finally, portable hard-shell spas are small enough that, when emptied, they can be easily carried or carted to a new location.
Upkeep
-
Just like normal stationary spas and hot tubs, portable hot tubs require some maintenance to keep them running at peak efficiency and to increase life expectancy. Water treatment chemical kits often come bundled with a hot tub or spa purchase and help keep the water purified and safe. Water filters also block objects such as leaves, insects and dirt clods from getting into the main tub. A hot tub's user manual includes the steps for filter replacement and water cleaning.

Features
-
Portable hot tubs and spas can come with optional accessories such as bubble jets, extra seating space, massage units and underwater lighting. Depending on the model being purchased, these features may cost extra. Most units range between 5 and 6 feet in diameter, large enough for two to six adults.
Prices
-
Normal hot tubs and spas can easily run more than $3,000, with deluxe models well above $5,000. Most portable spas and hot tubs fall within the range of $800 to $1,500, depending on the supplier and model.
Pros and Cons
-
Along with lower cost, a major advantage of portable hot tubs and spas is that they save space. When the hot tub is not in use, it can be deflated or folded up and packed away. Being stored the majority of the time also keeps the hot tub from being exposed to the elements as much as a traditional hot tub, avoiding wear and tear. Disadvantages involve the extra setup time for a portable hot tub, compared to a traditional one that's always ready for use. Also, traditional hot tubs and spas can be sturdier and more durable than portable versions.
