Boy Scout Bugler Job Description
The Boy Scouts offers a variety of leadership opportunities to its participants, including the chance to be a Scout Bugler. Buglers use a brass wind instrument, the bugle, to make "calls" to alert the other Scouts of events like assemblies, swimming, church, fire and call to quarters.

Qualifications of a Boy Scout Bugler

The age and rank of a Boy Scout are not generally considered when a member is interested in becoming a bugler. Those wishing to become a bugler, however, must have at least one year of experience playing a bugle, trumpet or coronet. Boys wishing to be a Scout Bugler must also have an attendance record of 75% or more over the course of the last six months. A Boy Scout Bugler must have the appointment approved by his Scout Master. Then the Scout is responsible to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.
General Duties of a Boy Scout Bugler

A Boy Scout Bugler is required to attend campouts and other Troop activities. He must know how to play different bugle calls and perform them at Troop events. Buglers must also be able to attend other Scouting events on the District and Council levels, and be able to play the appropriate calls as needed.

Specific Duties of a Boy Scout Bugler

To become a Boy Scout Bugler, a Troop member must be in the process of earning or already have a Bugling Merit Badge. He must know the following bugle calls: Assembly, Call to Quarters, Church, Mess, Drill, First Call, Officers, Fire, Recall, To the Colors, Retreat, Reveille, Taps and others as assigned. The Scout must be aware of the history, background and proper playing techniques associated with the bugle. A Boy Scout Bugler must know how to care for his instrument and must remember to bring it to all the outdoor Scout activities.
Performance Requirements

When a Boy Scout first becomes a bugler, he must attend leadership training (even if he's completed the training in the past). He must attend 75% or more of Troop meetings, Council meetings, service projects and other Boy Scout events.
Leadership Responsibilities

A Boy Scout Bugler is seen as a leader and is required to uphold the Scout Oath, Law and Motto; and wear his Scout uniform correctly and with pride to all Boy Scout activities and meetings. He is to be a good example to others, actively participate in Scout meetings and show Scout spirit. He must play the bugle as requested and play taps during an evening closing ceremony.
