Sales Training in the Medical Field

Sales Training in the Medical Field thumbnail
Medical sales representatives sell a variety of products.

Medical sales representatives sell medical and dental equipment and supplies to medical clinics, hospitals, medical schools and/or medical supply stores. Many medical sales representatives have bachelor's degrees, with varying specializations, such as in biology, chemistry, anatomy or physiology. While their educational backgrounds may be diverse, all medical sales representatives have some medical sales training, which helps them do their job. Most medical equipment companies have their own medical sales training programs specific to their product and their market, but there are also general medical sales training programs that can provide opportunities for career advancement.

  1. Content

    • The content of medical sales training can vary from specific product information to more general approaches to market analysis, communication or presentation skills. Some examples of medical sales training courses include executive selling, medical marketing, medical sales time management, handling objections in medical sales, physician or patient focused selling. Medical sales training content can be geared to the non-experienced medical sales representative, the mid-career medical sales representative or the medical sales manager.

    Methods

    • With the busy schedules of medical sales representatives, training needs to be delivered in accessible formats and accommodate different learning styles. Medical sales training can be delivered in short webinar formats, where medical sales representatives can be anywhere to access seminar information. Medical sales training courses can also be online or in person classes, delivered over a series of weeks. Distance learning, correspondence courses, self paced study or video on demand seminars are other methods that can be used for medical sales training.

    Certification

    • The Registered Medical Sales Representative (RMSR) is the medical sales certification offered by the National Association of Medical Sales Representatives (NAMSR). Certification provides assurance that medical sales representatives have acquired knowledge about rules and regulations in medical sales as well as effective selling techniques. Achievement of the RMSR designation means that students have completed medical sales training as well as passed a 150-question exam.

    Cost

    • Medical sales training can be part of a medical sales representative's job training, or it can be a benefit provided by the employer. Costs of medical sales training include monetary costs as well as a time investment. Webinars may run for only an hour and cost $50 to $200, while courses may cost $500 to $2,000, with a weekly time investment over several sessions.

    Professional Development

    • Part of sales training in the medical field also includes learning how to do market research and analysis. Staying on top of the medical sales field through newsletters, blogs, forums, conferences or symposiums or association memberships helps medical sales representatives to understand the market and help them to approach their sales in a strategic manner. Medical sales training can include professional development activities, such as reading clinical studies and the latest research to be effective in medical sales.
