Being an airline security manager is an adventurous and challenging job. The main purpose of your job is to provide management of an airline's operational security functions and to ensure that they are in compliance with current and future requirements of the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You must also manage functions, which will ensure the safety of the public and your security staff.

  1. Education & Training

    • To be an airline security manager, you must have a degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Management, Business or Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Aviation Science or a related field. Also, most airport operators want their candidate to have at least seven to eight years of experience in airport security operation or equivalent experience and training. Further, it is recommended that you have at least three years of experience in a managerial or supervisory position in a related security field.

    Duties & Functions

    • The following are only a few duties and functions that an airline security manager will have to perform on a daily basis. First, you will have to continually monitor the airports' security status and identify any potential current or future concerns. Second, you will need to analyze security and inspection reports to ensure that all TSA compliances are met. Third, you must notify TSA of any changes or challenges you face at your airport that require federal assistance. Fourth, you must address and correct any issue that does not meet standard security procedures. And lastly, you will interview, hire and train new security employees.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • As an airline security manger, you must possess many types of skills and areas of knowledge. You must have detailed knowledge of public safety and security in an airport setting. You must know details of all security equipment and procedures that ensure airport safety. Also, you must have knowledge of all local, state and federal airport security requirements and be aware of any new legislation. You must have skills in administrative financial planning and analysis. And, you must have skills in using computers, software programs and technology. Lastly, you must have knowledge of how to respond to a large crisis or emergency.

    Abilities

    • Besides skills and knowledge, you must posses several important abilities. You must have acute problem sensitivity and be aware of any potential problems that may occur. You must have excellent oral comprehension and expression with airport guests and staff. You must have good deductive reasoning with the ability to apply mandated security rules and procedures to a problem. You must be able to deal with highly stressful situations and be aware of all risks to others and yourself.

    Job Outlook

    • Demand for qualified and experienced airline security managers is high due to constant threats of terrorism and the increase use of airline transportation. Since the attacks using commercial airlines on Sept. 11, 2001, airport security has increased exponentially. Airport security involves not only airport personnel, but also the local police, the military and security guards.
