Computer science and IT graduates have a broad range of career options.

The career options for people who understand how computers work are expanding every day. The career opportunities still include more traditional computer programming, but now also allow trained professionals to work in development of anything from satellite technology to high-tech phones or video games. College students learn about software design, using computing to develop innovative solutions and develop their skills to think strategically in developing new uses for technology in the digital age.

  1. Software Design

    • One of the main career paths for both information technology and computer science graduates remains the field of software design and implementation. In today's world, developing Web sites and tools for use on the Internet are the most common jobs. Technological development has expanded software design to include the creation of solutions for phones and other mobile devices.

    Technological Development

    • A lot of computer scientists are also entrepreneurs, working to develop new ways to use technology. Areas such as robotics and digital forensics have come a long way because of the work of bright computer science graduates who have allowed themselves to become innovators in the computer technology field. While some of these specialists start their development in their garages, most have master's degrees or higher and specialize in research.

    Problem Solving

    • One of the best uses for computers throughout the years has been found in their ability to solve complex problems. The theoretical use of computer science is still an option for scientists who mostly work at the graduate school level and love the research and development aspects of computing. These professionals develop new and faster computing solutions.

    Business Information Technology

    • Almost every large to medium-sized company has an on-staff IT professional to manage the companies computing needs. The primary purpose of an IT degree is to prepare students to oversee organizational technology needs and evaluate hardware and software needs. This area involves more business management expertise than the typical IT or computer science field because of the budgeting aspects of the position.

    Entertainment

    • Between movies and video games with their high-end animation and the general development of those video games, the entertainment aspect of job availability for computer scientists and IT professionals continues to improve almost daily. Many colleges now have major fields of study that specifically train students to create video games.

    Future

    • While a lot of segments of the work force are in jeopardy as the economy changes, people who are trained to develop and use computers remain in a position of strength. Computer scientists and IT professionals are critical to keeping information flowing in a digital economy. While the industry continues to change, the demand only seems to increase.
