Visual arts are an important area of study.

Many wonder how art can be taught. The ability to create and explore creativity is encouraged through school and enforced by taking art classes. National standards for the visual arts were created to assist educators to focus teaching on specific skill sets and concepts for a complete art education.

  1. Significance

    • According to Americans for the Arts, standards are considered main concepts that students should master within any given academic institution. Fine art standards focus on the area of the visual arts, but there are national standards for the arts for the areas of dance, music and theater.

    Function

    • A team of fine art educators alongside other experts in the area of art created the National Standards for the Arts in 1994. According to the Americans for the Arts, the national standards describe what a child with a full and sequential art education should be able to accomplish by various grade levels.

    National Visual Arts Content Standard 1

    • The Kennedy Center explains that the national visual arts content standard 1 is understanding and applying media, techniques and process. For all grade levels, this means knowing the difference between art materials, the ability to describe the different materials used in art creation and the ability to use art materials to express one's self along with using materials with respect.

    National Visual Arts Content Standard 2

    • Using knowledge of structures and functions within the art classroom is national visual arts content standard 2. Students grades k-4 should understand the concept of visual characteristics as well as structures. By grades 5-8, students can organize their art along with analyzing what makes the art effective. In grades 9-12, students will master these abilities.

    National Visual Arts Content Standard 3 and 4

    • Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas is the main concept of national visual arts content standard 3. This involves exploring symbol making and subject matter found within art. For all grades, students learn how to explore art and use different subject matters and themes. National content standard 3 works alongside visual arts content standard 4, which is understanding the visual arts in relation to history and culture.

    National Visual Arts Content Standard 5 and 6

    • The ability of reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of an individual's work and the work of others is national visual arts content standard 5. For all grades, this includes teaching students the understanding of creating visual art and how their own experiences and others impact the creation of art. Visual art national content standard 6, which is making connections between the visual arts and other disciplines, helps students understand the way art has influenced and been influenced by other areas of study, such as math, science and social studies.
