.Bup File Extension Information

.Bup File Extension Information thumbnail
The file extension .BUP is a backup file for DVDs.

File extensions, which are acronyms at the end of a file name, denote the type of file they are attached to and may only be opened by certain programs. The file extension .BUP is most commonly known as a type of backup file that is used to back up data on a DVD disk.

  1. Features

    • The letters "BUP" stand for "Backup." This type of file usually functions as a backup safety file for information on a DVD-Video Disc Information (IFO) file. Both files store information such as which screen to show when the disk is started, the beginning of each chapter and the location of audio tracks.

    Programs

    • BUP files are accessible with the Window's programs CyberLink PowerDVD 10, InterVideo WinDVD and Nero ShowTime, as well as Apple's program DVD Studio Pro. Most programs for either Windows or Mac operating systems use BUP as their backup files for DVD and video purposes.

    Uses

    • If an IFO file becomes corrupted or otherwise rendered unusable, your computer's media player should be able to access the file automatically by reverting to the BUP file version. You should not need to open a file as a BUP yourself, because it is only used for emergency purposes.

    Troubleshooting

    • If you are having problems accessing files as either a BUP or IFO, it may be an error in your registry, which is a common cause of incorrect file associations for computers running Windows. If this happens, you can check your registry and even run a free scan (see Resources).

    Other Types

    • There are four other types of less common files that use the file extension BUP. These include the Brother Embroidery system file, a CD Indexer file, a PC-Bibliothek update file and the Softcode Tracker Contact Manager backup file.
