Fishing in Icy Strait, Alaska thumbnail
Icy Strait is a fishing hot spot.

Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Alaska, is a huge tourist attraction, with many restaurants, shops, live entertainment experiences, sightseeing tours, cruises, kayaking options and bike tours, let alone fishing. Around Port Frederik and the Icy Strait, fishing is one of the area's most popular activities.

  1. Full-Day Sport Fishing

About a half-hour boat ride away, the full-day fishing tours provide about 2.5 hours of actual fishing time. All five species of Pacific salmon reside in the waters, and they are the main target of the day. However, sometimes the captain will allow fishing for other creatures. One-day fishing licenses are purchased from the captain, as are king salmon stamps during the king salmon season. If an angler chooses to keep his or her catch, the boating company is not responsible for storage, processing or shipping.

    Hailbut Fishing Tours

Icy Strait is a prime region for halibut.

In the same style as the sport fishing tour, the halibut fishing tour comprises an approximately one-hour travel time round trip and about 2.5 hours of actual fishing. The same regulations about keeping a fish and the one-day fishing license rules apply as well. In addition to fishing opportunities, the marine life in the area is abundant, so Icy Straight recommends that visitors bring their cameras and plenty of film.

    Glacier Wind Charters

Glacier Wind also offers salmon and halibut expeditions and works with the Huna Fish Company to provide packaging, freezing and shipment of any fish caught and kept at an additional charge. King salmon are most prevalent in May and June, Pink and chum in early July and then silvers in late July. By late August, all four types are abundant in number in the waters.

Icy Strait Adventures boasts that the fishing in the area is extremely productive, so clients are encouraged to use some catch-and-release tactics. After two boxes of fillets per person are caught, the company requests that you release your catch back into the waters. Some of the guests spend more than one day on the ocean to practice fly fishing or spin casting.

    Royal Charters and Tours

Led by Captain Royal Hill Sr., a professional who has been fishing in the Alaskan waters his whole life, guests will specifically look for king salmon, Coho salmon and Pacific halibut. Lodging and fishing licenses will be arranged by the company. Royal Charters encourage guests to bring cameras as they may also spot sea otters, seals, sea lions and maybe even a humpback whale.
