Benefits
RIT has always had an excellent reputation for its environmental safety and management classes as well as for working closely with industry, and the OSHA Training Institute cites this reputation as a reason for selecting RIT as a regional training center. The OSHA Training Institute education center at RIT offers a full schedule of classes.
Courses
RIT offers training in OSHA standards and occupational health and safety concerns. Courses include construction safety, ergonomics, fire engineering, chemical exposure and respiratory protection. Classes are hands-on and tailored to the workforce. Participants earn certificates by completing six to seven classes, depending on whether they seek a General Industry Safety and Health Specialist Certificate or a Construction Safety and Health Specialist Certificate. Participants can acquire authorization as an OSHA outreach trainer if they choose to enroll in the Trainer Course for Occupational Health and Safety. This authorization is distinct from the certificate programs and allows an individual to lead OSHA outreach classes.
Facilities
RIT provides training at a number of education centers throughout the state of New York. These include four in the city of Rochester, one in the nearby town of Brockport, one outside of neighboring city Buffalo, and two in Syracuse. RIT also sponsors training in the cities of Oneida, Albany and Long Island City.
Online Training
RIT offers online safety training programs for personnel unable to attend the traditional on-campus classes. Online students use OSHA handbooks and materials accessible via their student accounts in order to study independently. After completing the course, students take a final quiz online. RIT offers both 10-hour and 30-hour courses in both general industry and construction topics online.
Certificates
The RIT OSHA Training Center offers two different Safety and Health Specialist Certificates. The Construction Safety and Health Specialist Certificate offers classes in topics like disaster site work, electrical standards and construction noise. This certificate qualifies recipients to implement OSHA regulations and develop workplace safety solutions on the construction field. The General Industry Safety and Health Specialist Certificate offers courses in topics such as ergonomics, hazardous materials and machine-guarding standards. This certificate qualifies recipients to oversee OSHA regulations and devise workplace safety strategies in a general industrial setting. Both certificates provide a flexible choice of electives.
