Baby Phat first began as a way to bring publicity to Phat Farm, which is a hip-hop fashion line designed for men. When Baby Phat premiered on Phat Farm's fashion runways, the line proved popular, according to Funding Universe. Celebrities and models began to wear Baby Phat T-shirts, which featured their logo, a cat. Phat Farm creators decided that Baby Phat should design a line of sportswear.

Former model Kimora Lee Simmons was chosen to create and design Baby Phat's fashion line. Kimora was married to Russell Simmons, the co-creator of Def Jam and the creator of Phat Farm, at the time she was slated as Baby Phat's director. Besides being familiar with Phat Farm, Simmons had experience in fashion due to her years of modeling.
