What is a Natural Mold & Mildew Cleaner?
Mold and mildew are different variations of the same fungal growth. They can be considered cousins. Because of this, both mold and mildew can be killed by the same natural remedies. If you have a severe case of mold or suspect the presence of black mold in your home, consult a professional mold exterminator immediately. Natural cleaners are usually not enough to kill severe outbreaks of mold. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Vinegar
-
Vinegar is able to kill most forms of mold and mildew. According to Care 2, a website about natural cleaning and living, vinegar is capable of killing around 82 percent of all mold and mildew. Place some white vinegar into a plastic spray bottle. Spray the vinegar liberally over the mildew or mold and allow to sit overnight. The mold should be gone from the area the next day. You can then use a cloth to wipe away the excess vinegar and mold spores.
Tea Tree Oil
-
Tea tree oil can also work effectively as a natural killer for mildew and mold. Mix 2 tsp. of tea tree oil (found at health food stores) into 2 cups of water. Place in a spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray the mildewed or molded surface with the solution and allow to sit for several days. Within a few days the mildew and mold should be eliminated from the area.

Grapefruit Seed Extract
-
Grapefruit seed extract works like tea tree oil to kill mildew. The main advantage of this method over tea tree oil is that it is odorless. Tea tree oil can produce a very distinct odor. Mix 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract (found at health food stores) in 2 cups of water. Place in a spray bottle and spray over the mildewed surface. In a few days the mildew should be completely gone.
Benefits
-
There are many benefits to removing mold and mildew naturally. One benefit is that natural remedies are usually safer for the item that contains the mold or mildew. Harsh chemicals can often damage the surface of furniture and walls. Chemicals are also damaging to the skin and lungs if touched or inhaled. Natural killers for mold and mildew also help prevent expensive replacement bills for items that commonly get moldy. Killing mildew and mold yourself also saves the cost of hiring a professional. However, you should always consult with a professional for severe mold outbreaks.
Prevention/Solution
-
The presence of mold and mildew can be prevented by reducing humidity in a room. You can use a dehumidifier or reduce the amount of water that you use in the room. You can also install a fan to dry moisture from a room. Keep the temperatures of bathrooms as cool as possible. Regular cleaning can also prevent the growth of mold.
