Political History
-
The South Tyrol was part of Austria from 1363 and under the rule of the Hapsburgs until 1918. After World War I it was ceded to Italy 1919 under the stipulations of the Treaty of Saint-Germain. The 1910 census showed that 92.2 percent of the region's inhabitants were ethnic Germans and only 2.9 percent were Italian. In the years that followed the war the area became Italianized under Mussolini's fascist regime.
The South Tyrol - Trentino-Alto Adige
-
The Tyrolean province in Italy is part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Trento had been a minority Italian-speaking area even prior to World War I, but it has remained a majority ethnic German region. By the turn of the 21st century, more than half of the inhabitants of the region still identified themselves as ethnic Germans.

Tyrolean Costume
-
Tyrolean costume is a traditional ethnic form of dress that is commonly associated with Austrian national costumes. It is characterized by a dirndl style wool skirt for women, often decorated with an embroidered ribbon. For men the typical Tyrolean costume is a pair of lederhosen and a hat made with wool felt (usually green) and a band around the crown (usually brown).
The Tyrol Today
-
Tourism is an important part of the Tyrolean economy today. There are popular ski areas on the Austrian and Italian sides, such as the ski resorts Innsbruck (Austria) and Bolzano (Italy). Outside of winter the region is a popular area for hiking and camping. Also important to the economy are a successful handicraft industry, agriculture, and a large service sector. Tyrolean Airways is a division of the Austrian Airlines Group, which has flights to the region.
In 1991 a mummy preserved along with his clothing and possessions was found in the Tyrolean Alps, and he became known as --tzi the Iceman. --tzi dates back to the Neolithic age, and he is now one of the most famous Tyroleans in history. Because he was found in the border area between Italy and Austria a new survey of the border was carried out in October of that year. --tzi was in fact found in Italian South Tyrol, but just 92.56 meters from the border with Austrian North Tyrol.
