Integrated accounting and inventory software can help your organization track accounting costs and inventory items

There are various types of accounting and inventory software, ranging from retail sales applications to logistic management processes. Accounting and inventory software applications use Windows-based operating systems as a processing platform and can also be found on mainframes in large businesses and organizations.

  1. Retail Sales Application

    • A retail sales accounting and inventory application tracks inventory by the retail sale price of an item. Most applications provide a complete analysis of products, purchased by the consumer or businesses, and through a knowledge-base system, provide information on the best-selling products in retail. In a retail sales environment, dynamic integration takes place between the accounting and inventory function.

    Manufacturing System Application

    • Manufacturing involves the process of assembling different parts together to manufacture a product. Accounting and inventory software, in the manufacturing process, addresses separate assembly parts. The application tracks the cost and time to manufacture the item; the software includes procedures for accounting for each manufactured part of the assembly. Monthly reports of items reflect accounting costs for the assembly.

    Distribution System Application

    • Distribution systems are centers receiving and shipping cargo to its destination. Accounting and inventory software applications can provide information on shipping codes, routing identifier, nomenclature while inventory establishes information on quantities, reject codes and quantities to be distributed. There are special inventory codes, which "flag" cargo items damaged in shipment. Accounting and inventory systems help the traffic flow smoothly under the concept of distribution management.

    Logistics Management Application

    • Logistics operations involve the transporting and movement of cargo from one port, distribution center or warehouse to an established destination. Accounting and inventory software applications are applied to logistics and can provide accounting information such as the dollar amount of cargo and how much inventory is contained in one shipment or manifest. Laptop, hand-held and PDA hardware is being used by transportation personnel in many industries to assist with logistical operations.

    Inventory Management Application

    • Excess inventory stock can cause a business millions of dollars. Applying accounting and inventory software ensures balanced stock levels, reasonable reorder points and actual cost vs. retail cost analysis for profit margins. The inventory module of accounting software can perform different types of inventories based on analysis. There are other inventory software programs that can be used as third party extensions to existing accounting programs for specialized and custom-made inventory processes.
