Golf Cart Battery Care
Golf cart batteries, like car batteries, must be properly maintained and cared for. Not properly maintaining the battery can result in loss of reliability and shorter battery life. Proper maintenance can be quick and cheap and only has to be done two times a year.
-
Removing Dirt and Grass
-
When using a golf cart, it is quite easy for dirt and cut grass to build up on your golf cart battery. Use a soft bristled brush to carefully wipe the debris off the battery. You can also use a towel to wipe the battery clean.
Cleaning Terminals
-
Battery terminals tend to develop corrosion over time. If left alone, this corrosion can diminish the quality of the contacts between your golf cart battery and golf cart. Mix two tablespoons of baking soda and a pint of water together and pour on terminals. Consider purchasing a battery terminal cleaner to use in conjunction with the baking soda and water.
-
Tighten Bolts
-
Using a golf cart will eventually cause loose connections on the battery. Loose connections can result in battery cables falling off. Tighten the terminal bolts on the battery using a wrench. Make sure to not force the bolts, but ensure a snug fit.
Fluid Level
-
Some golf cart batteries are serviceable batteries. These batteries may need to have their fluid topped off occasionally. Use distilled water to fill the battery up to the fill line. This will lengthen the life of your battery and insure that it is dependable. Always check your battery's manufacturers manual to determine whether or not water should be added.
Keep the Battery Charged
-
Always make sure the golf cart battery is charged. Allowing the charge level to dip to low levels can severely diminish the capacity of the battery. Use battery testers to find out the energy level of the battery and attach a battery charger if necessary. Battery chargers will charge the battery of the golf cart while it is parked.
