What Is a Flash Rollover Button ?
Flash rollover buttons are a type of button mainly used in websites. Rollover buttons are very common, and most websites utilize them in one form or the other. Flash refers to a software program created by Adobe, where rollover buttons can be made. Rollover buttons are not exclusive to Flash, and can be created in many other programs, such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Rollover buttons can even be created using programming languages such as HTML or CSS.

Definition
-
Flash rollover buttons are buttons that change appearance when a mouse hovers over them, and when they are clicked on. Generally rollover buttons change appearances in both instances, however they can be made to do one or the other.
States
-
Flash rollover buttons generally have three different "states." The button changes appearance in each state. The first state, referred to as "up" in Flash, indicates how the button will look in its default form. The second state, "over," is how the button will look when the mouse is hovered over it. The last state, "down," refers to how the button will look when it is pressed or clicked on.

Disjointed Rollover Button
-
A disjointed rollover is another type of rollover button that can be created in Flash. Instead of the button itself changing appearance, rolling over this type of button will cause a change elsewhere on the web page. A disjointed rollover button could be used on a website with a list of names and when someone hovered over a name, his picture might appear in a frame at the top.
Rollover Image
-
A rollover image is essentially a rollover button with no "down" state that can also be created in Flash. A rollover image changes from one picture to another when the mouse hovers over it, and then back to the original image when the mouse leaves it, but does not act as a button. Additionally, rollover images can be created so that every time the mouse hovers over the image, the image changes to a different image out of several, instead of changing back to the original when the mouse leaves the image. Rollover images can also be used in a disjointed fashion like disjointed rollover buttons.
Sound and Animation
-
Flash can be used to create both rollover images and rollover buttons that include sound and animations. A website that has still images from movies may use an animated rollover button to play a short clip of the movie when the mouse hovers over the image. Sound may be used in a rollover button to inform a visitor to a website what clicking on the button may do.
