Pet Rescue in Oklahoma

Rescued animals of all breeds and species can come from a variety of situations. Some are abused or neglected, or some are just given up for adoption by owners who could no longer care for them. Some are pedigreed dogs rescued from abusive puppy mills, and some are farm animals saved from hazardous living conditions or certain death due to injury. Across the state of Oklahoma are a variety of animal rescue centers that provide care for these animals and promote adoption.

Oklahoma Humane Societies

Humane societies are shelters that are part of a national network of shelters providing safe havens for domestic animals, namely cats and dogs, that have been reported abused or neglected or have been abandoned. In Oklahoma, there are six main humane societies: Pets and People Humane Society in Yukon, Rogers County Humane Society in Claremore, Cimmaron Valley Humane Society in Cushing, Oklahoma Humane Society in Oklahoma City, The Humane Society of Tulsa in Tulsa and The Humane Society of Stillwater in Stillwater. All of these humane societies offer adoption centers, spaying and neutering services and fostering and volunteer opportunities for people who are unable to adopt, but still eager to help.

Oklahoma No-Kill Shelters

No-kill shelters house and protect abused, neglected, abandoned or stray domestic animals and do not euthanize them. To prevent overcrowding, these shelters often have a network of volunteers who foster rescued animals until they are adopted into permanent homes. Oklahoma Breed Rescues

In addition to Humane Society shelters and no-kill shelters, there are a number of animal rescue shelters that specialize in dog rescues of specific breeds. Often these animals are given up by owners who could not care for them or they are rescued from abusive puppy mills. Oklahoma has a number of breed-specific shelters from mastiffs to great Danes to beagles to Boston terriers. For instance, FASTHound Greyhound Adoption Inc. in Seminole is a non-profit, volunteer rescue service which places retired racing Greyhounds in loving homes.

Oklahoma Exotic Pet Rescues

Other domestic pets beside cats and dogs need rescue and protection too. Fortunately, Oklahoma has a number of pet rescues for exotic animals in need. These shelters include Oklahoma Parrot Rescue and Ferrets Rays of Hope in Oklahoma City, Southwest Oklahoma Ferret Rescue in Sterling, Heartland Rabbit Rescue in Blanchard and Rat Finx Rat Rescue of Oklahoma, which helps pet rats throughout the state. These Oklahoma shelters provide the special needs for exotic or other rare pets that would not find comfort in a shelter that predominantly houses cats and dogs, until they can be adopted into permanent homes.

Oklahoma Farm Animal Rescue

Oklahoma farm animals can find themselves in need as well. Across the state, farm animal rescue organizations provide help to horses, pigs, goats and sheep. Whether they have been abused or neglected or abandoned because of age or injury, these Oklahoma shelters aim to help homeless farm animals. For instance, Horse Feathers Equine Rescue in Guthrie, rehabilitates ill horses and then offers them to loving homes for a nominal fee which benefits the rehabilitation of other injured or ill horses.
