    • You can effectively negotiate a higher salary for yourself if you follow career columnist Penelope Trunk's advice to shy away from disclosing pay stipulations throughout the interview process. Make it clear that you'd be happy to discuss salary once you have an offer. Doing so puts the ball in your court because their budget range will be in plain sight, giving you a bargaining tool to work with.
