Information About the Air Filter on a Car
Think of an air filter as lungs for your car. As part of an automobile's intake system, an air filter performs duties true to its name. It stops bugs, particles and other airborne material from entering a car's engine. Without an air filter, these small particles could eventually cause big damage, even leading to complete engine failure. Because it performs such an important function, it's imperative to keep your car's air filter clean, replacing it every time you bring your car in for an oil change.

Importance
-
Air filters stop harmful material from entering an engine. Because all air enters a car engine through the air filter, dirty filters can affect engine performance. If you live in a state where car emissions are monitored annually, it's even more important to keep the filter clean. A dirty air filter can lead to a failed emissions test. Over time, dirty air filters can also slow acceleration and damage spark plugs.
Types
-
Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) replacement filters are the most common filters that consumers purchase. These filters are easily available in auto part stores or from your local dealership. Performance filters are also available for purchase. These high-end filters actually increase the amount of air available to your car engine, leading to higher acceleration and more engine horsepower. K&N and Airhog are two of the more popular and well known high-performance filters on the market.

Design
-
Depending on the manufacturer, air filters are constructed from paper, cotton or foam. Paper filters are the most common for automobiles. They are pleated, like an accordion and usually round. Foam filters are increasing in popularity. They are normally thicker than the paper filters. Foam filter manufacturers claim that the material, when dirty, restricts engine air flow much less than the paper filters.
Cost
-
Most air filters are reasonably priced, ranging from $6 to $30. Prices vary according to use. Most automobile filters will be at the lower end. Racing or high-performance vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and snowmobile filters generally cost more. Though more expensive, these high-performance air filters can be washed and reused, unlike normal automobile filters.
Maintenaince
-
Only high-performance air filters are recyclable. All other air filters should be discarded and replaced every 3,000 miles, about the same time many mechanics advise changing your oil. Replacing an air filter is not a difficult process, and some car owners choose to perform that maintenance themselves as a cost saving measure. If you're uncertain where your filter is located, consult your car manual.
