Significance
-
Martial arts training is an integral part of Navy Seal training. Besides possessing excellent stamina and physical fitness, Navy Seals are also adept at different forms of combat training. For long-distance combat, Seals are proficient in firearms and explosives. In close hand-to-hand combat situations, martial arts training is used when weapons are not practical.
Identification
-
The style of martial arts used by the Navy Seals goes by two names: Close Quarters Combat (CQC) and Close Quarters Battle (CQB). It has two guiding principles. First, the Seal must be able to get close to his target without being detected. Second, he must be able to kill the target quickly. This martial art is a compilation of more than 50 different martial arts styles. CQC only uses the techniques that can inflict lethal damage. Three martial arts that provide a strong influence to CQC are mauy thai, krav maga and combat jujitsu.

Mauy Thai
-
Mauy thai is known as the science of eight limbs. It uses the hands, elbows, knees and legs to deliver powerful strikes. A strike that sets muay thai apart from other martial arts is the roundhouse kick. When throwing a roundhouse kick, the lead foot is pivoted 45 degrees to incorporate the hips into the kick and make the force significantly greater. This is an excellent weapon for long range hand-to-hand combat. In close range hand-to-hand, the elbow strikes of muay thai are effective for cutting the facial area and causing bleeding that can obstruct vision.
Krav Maga
-
Krav maga is a martial art form that lends itself well to Navy Seal training because it can be used against multiple attackers. Krav maga is popular among many military agencies. It is based on street fighting and uses the techniques that are most effective in that form of combat. One of the guiding principles of krav maga is the use of hard surfaces (elbows, fists) against the vulnerable areas of an attacker (throat, stomach). Each strike must be quick and, at minimum, stun the opponent.
Combat Juijitsu
-
Combat jujitsu is commonly referred to as one of the deadliest martial arts in the world. It varies from traditional jujitsu forms in that they are intended for self-defense and counteracting an attack. Combat jujitsu is about instigating an attack and finishing off an opponent with lethal force. Jujitsu is useful to Navy Seals because it involves both take downs and chokes, which allow the attacker to incapacitate his target quickly and quietly.
