Hospitality and tourism are ever-expanding fields with educational requirements that can range from simple on-the-job experience to master's level education. These fields not only specialize in creating a memorable experience for guests, but anticipating needs through preparation and careful planning. As fields become more competitive, businesses have shown an increasing preference for candidates with four-year degrees that display the latest knowledge of the hospitality or tourism industry to potentially give the business a much-needed edge over the competition.
First-level hotel managers are sometimes promoted from within a given hotel and require only the experience the worker has garnered through his work in his previous hotel positions. Those seeking advancement in hotel management, immediate placement within a hotel management structure or to procure a position at more prestigious hotel are required to obtain a four-year degree in hotel management and will more than likely need to pursue a master's degree in hotel management or other area of hospitality management to progress to the upper echelons of the hotel business.
Employer's seeking candidates to fill positions in event and convention planning prefer a four year degree. According to bls.gov, the percentage of event and convention planners with bachelor's degrees in the field is increasing due to the nature of the work becoming more complex. Graduates entering into event planning have degrees from a variety of disciplines, including marketing, event planning, hospitality management and business.
A restaurant manager receives the majority of his education while on the job. This is due to a manager often being required to have working knowledge of each restaurant position be that server, bartender or even dishwasher so that he may "help out" if the occasion calls for it. That is not to say formal education is not desirable, many corporate restaurants are showing preferences to managers possessing two- or four- year degrees in business management, restaurant management or hospitality.
Education for a head chef can come from a variety of avenues. Many receive formal training in post-secondary institutions, such as culinary schools, technical schools or community colleges often with internships in working restaurants required as part of the educational experience. Chefs may also be mentored as young cooks by established head chefs being taught in the master's style and eventually taking on the role of head chef in another establishment or assuming that role from the chef that has taught him.
Agencies generally prefer travel agents with specific training. Many community colleges, online universities and vocational schools have programs for students to become travel agents. According to bls.gov, continuing education is a crucial element for those wishing to be successful travel agents as each must keep abreast of popular tourist destinations, travel trends and travel incentives.
