2002 Ford Mustang Information

Introduced in 1964, the Ford Mustang has a storied history. The 2002 Mustang is part of the fourth-generation body style, which began in 1994, although several styling changes were made following 1999. The 2002 Mustang MSRPs ranged in price from $17,475 to $28,645, with V6 coupes being the least expensive, while GT convertibles were the most expensive.

  1. Configurations

    • The 2002 Mustang was available in coupe or convertible configuration. Both were available as Standard or GT models. The primary difference between Standard and GT models was the engine. The Standard model came with a V6; the GT came with a V8. The GT model came with more equipment than the Standard model, with features such as a rear-wing spoiler, front-air dam and fog lights; these features were available on the Standard model at additional cost.

    Trim Levels

    • The 2002 Mustang came in several trim levels. For the coupe these were, in order of pricing lowest to highest, Deluxe, Base, Premium, GT Deluxe and GT Premium. Trim levels for the convertible were the same, except the second-level Base configuration was eliminated.

    Drivetrain

    • The base V6 engine is a 3.8L with 193 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. The engine offered in GT models is a 4.6L V8 that produces 260 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque. The engines carried over into the convertible configuration.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, and a four-speed automatic optional.

    Fuel Economy

    • Despite the differences in power output, fuel economy is similar between the V6 and V8 engine. The V6 is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway when mated to the manual transmission. It's rated at 17 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway with the automatic transmission.

The V8 is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway with the manual transmission. When mated to the automatic transmission, it's rated at 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway.

    Special Versions

    • There were two special versions of the Ford Mustang for the 2002: the Bullitt edition and the SVT Cobra. The Bullitt Mustang was based on the car featured in the 1968 film "Bullitt," known for its groundbreaking car chase scene. The Bullitt version included a tweaked V8 engine and special badges; horsepower was raised from 260 to 265.

The SVT Cobra was developed by Ford's in-house tuner program (Special Vehicle Team). It featured a supercharged-V8 engine that produced 390 horsepower. Although released in early 2002, the SVT Cobra was listed as a 2003 model.
