Many people new to the film and television industry find that this is a good entry-level position to springboard their career into film and television production. The job of a production assistant can lead to other creative jobs such as writing and directing.

  1. Educational Requirements:

    • Certain entry-level positions as a television production assistant do not have any set educational requirements, however, strong office and communication skills are required. Work and life experience in a related field such as completed college level work on a student film, radio and television studio or theater production is helpful. Production assistants must be able to multitask effectively. Some positions require a bachelor's degree in a related field. These positions are dependent on the place of employment and are not a set industry requirement.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Production assistants must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record to work for most television stations and production companies. They must be able to work long hours, follow directions and maintain a positive attitude while often working under less-than-desirable conditions.

The job requires the employee to be able to lift and position heavy props and lighting assemblies.     • Production assistants work in studio settings and on remote locations for on-site and recorded production of television footage. Television productions often require working in varying weather conditions depending on the projects subject matter and scheduling requirements. The work is often stressful and demanding because of the expense of producing television programs. Production assistants have to be able to work with other creative people and solve problems with limited time and resources.

    • A job as television production assistants does not offer a steady or reliable source of income because most positions are short term or per project based, additionally television programs are subject to cancellation. Employers do not provide benefits such as health care or retirement plans. Pay varies by company, location and length of the project. The estimated annual income as of Sept. 1, 2008, ranges from $24,000 to $29,000. There is no set time schedule for working hours on a television or film production and employment is usually short term so the major benefit for the job is as a steppingstone to other positions in the broadcast industry.
