Because not all people are college bound, many individuals find vocational education training to be a necessary part of high school education. Whether it is a person with a disability or someone that is not interested in a career that requires a college education, the training provides a more meaningful education. This gives students the ability to find purpose and focus on something that will matter to them.
Vocational education training provides information to individuals that will allow them to be successful in a job. It can involve training on how to get the job, behave and dress while there, and complete the work required. The skills needed to accomplish these things are taught along with other skills, such as filling out a time sheet, which are also necessary to succeed. Students in high school that focus on this might spend less time working on skills that are taught specifically to be successful in college.
Vocational training allows a student that might not be capable or interested in going to college with the opportunity to focus her education on something that will benefit her. The education she receives will allow her to move more quickly into the job opportunity that she desires. For a student that does not enjoy school, focusing on something that she is interested in and feels is important to her will also assist her in completing the program.
Vocational education training is a necessary part of education for students with disabilities who will need the help to become more independent when they transition out of high school. A teacher can provide vocational opportunities for these students within the school. Some examples of this are watering classroom plants, completing the making of an item and selling it, or collecting recycling from each classroom. Students with disabilities should be encouraged to independently follow a schedule and complete the job with as little help as possible.
For students who want training in a more technical field, programs are often available within the school that are more focused on hands on experiences in the topic of interest. Examples such as auto repair, plumbing and electronics provide students with what they need to know in order to enter the work force after school.
Experience in the community can be a benefit to those with or without disabilities. It provides a chance to determine if the job is something the student wants to pursue. In addition, contacts may be developed that will help for job placement later. Students with disabilities will especially benefit from being able to gain real world experience because it improves their ability to learn and be successful.
For experiences outside of the school, a job coach may be used to assist the student in their vocational endeavors. This person will balance helping students be successful with pushing them to be independent. In many cases, job coaches will entice an employer to provide training experiences for students because it allows them to gain an extra pair of hands.
