Headmaster means head teacher, or master of subject matter. A Christian headmaster is a principal who embodies Christian values as the leader of a private Christian school. The job of a Christian headmaster, however, has not always so closely resembled that of the principal we are more familiar with today.

Traditionally, a headmaster was a teacher who headed the school. His leading role was that of an educator who had mastered general knowledge of the seven liberal arts and whose life was a leisurely one of learning, teaching, and embodying the Christian vision of the school. According to the Circe Institute, the Industrial Revolution and the management revolution after Word War II led to bureaucratic structuring of schools that ultimately changed the role of the headmaster primarily to that of administrator.
