A creative designer is someone who handles design used to promote a company, or its product and services. Creative designers are employed in a variety of fields, including print, broadcasting and advertising. Some creative designers specialize in artwork for publications or websites, others specialize in electronic design, and others specialize in commercial design. But no matter the industry, creative designers are an important part of helping a company build an identity and ultimately, remain profitable.

Basics

  • Creative designers either use their own idea, or build off an idea generated by someone else, often a client or supervisor. Those employed in the commercial industry build graphics and artwork for places such as restaurants that are aiming for a new look to their menu, or companies in need of a logo. Meanwhile, creative designers in the electronic industry create banners for websites or graphics for television and cable broadcasts, or perhaps even movies. And those in the advertising or print fields make signs or graphics used to complement an article. Designers who possess the skills needed to work in one field are often able to move into others with relative ease.

Skills

  • A creative designer needs to be highly innovative and a strong communicator, as he often interacts with everyone from supervisors to co-workers to clients on a daily basis. He needs to keep an eye on trends and know what’s “hot” to create modern designs, and work well alone or a member of a team. Creative designers should be organized and analytical, and understand how to use computer programs related to their work, such as Illustrator or PhotoShop.

Background

  • Most companies seek candidates with a bachelor’s degree when hiring a creative designer. The majority of creative designers focus on college courses in graphics, art, marketing, advertising and communications. Occasionally, a creative designer will only need a high school diploma or equivalent to obtain a job, provided she has developed a strong portfolio of artwork.

Prospects

  • More than 286,000 workers were employed as creative designers in May 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Jobs for creative designers are expected to increase by 13 percent during the 2008 to 2018 decade, the BLS reported, which is about as fast as average for all occupations.

Earnings

  • Creative designers earned anywhere from $26,000 to more than $57,000 per year in March 2010, according to PayScale.com. Meanwhile, the BLS reported that the median salary of creative designers was $42,400 per year in May 2008.
