The Sierra Club offers varying levels of membership, career opportunities, local, national and international outings, volunteer vacations, electronic publications, books, online community resources, merchandise and more.

  1. Founder

    • The Sierra Club was founded by John Muir in 1892. He served as its first president and held that position until he died in 1914. Born in California in 1838, Muir is well-known as the most influential naturalist and conservationist in America. Particularly noted as "the father of our national parks," he explored America's wilderness in search of its natural beauty and has authored many writings that inspired the creation of Yosemite, Mount Rainier and the Grand Canyon. Many places have been named after him, including Muir Woods National Monument, the John Muir Trail and Muir College.
