Several factors affect the salaries of the service members of the United States Marine Corps. These include rank, length of service, and type of service. Factors not included in the take-home pay of the U.S. Marines are allowances for housing, clothing, and other benefits such as medical and dental insurance.

  1. Enlisted Marines with Under Five Years of Service

    • The lowest pay scales are for enlisted Marines. The lowest enlisted rank is E-1 and the highest is E-9. Marines who reach E-9 obtain the rank of sergeant major and earn $7,386.30 per month up until their 10th year of service, at which time their pay increases on an annual basis. The average monthly pay of Marines with less than five years of service for grades E-1 through E-7 is $2,205, with higher-ranking Marines earning more than lower-ranking ones.

Warrant Officers with Less Than Five Years of Service

    • Warrant officers rank above enlistees and below regular officers. These Marines fall into the middle pay scales. Warrant officers rank from W-1 through W-4.The average monthly pay for warrant officers with fewer than five years of service is $3,511.

Officers with Less Than Five Years of Service

    • The highest-ranking Marines are the officers. Officers rank from O-1 through O-8. The average monthly pay for an officer with less than five years of service is $5,740. An O-1 with two or less years of service earns $2,745 per month and an O-8 with at least four years of service earns $9,970 per month.

    Pay Ceilings

    • Officers ranked O-7 through O-10 have their pay capped at $14,975 per month regardless of length of service. Officers ranked O-6 and below have their income capped at $12,141 per month regardless of length of service.

    The Highest-Paid Officer

    • The highest-ranking and highest-paid officer of the United States Marine Corps is the commandant. He earns a monthly salary of $19,983 per month.

    Considerations

    • It is important to understand that base salaries are just one aspect of the compensation of a U.S. Marine. Medical and dental benefits, housing allowances, clothing allowances, and combat pay are all factors that should be considered when trying to determine a Marine's compensation.
