The lowest pay scales are for enlisted Marines. The lowest enlisted rank is E-1 and the highest is E-9. Marines who reach E-9 obtain the rank of sergeant major and earn $7,386.30 per month up until their 10th year of service, at which time their pay increases on an annual basis. The average monthly pay of Marines with less than five years of service for grades E-1 through E-7 is $2,205, with higher-ranking Marines earning more than lower-ranking ones.

The highest-ranking Marines are the officers. Officers rank from O-1 through O-8. The average monthly pay for an officer with less than five years of service is $5,740. An O-1 with two or less years of service earns $2,745 per month and an O-8 with at least four years of service earns $9,970 per month.
