Job Description of a Mobile Therapist

A mobile therapist is responsible for providing counseling services to a child and/or the child's family in a location other than the therapist's office. The services offered by the therapist will vary according to the needs of the individual, though the general course of therapy requires active child participation.

Professional Requirements

  • The therapist is responsible for conducting individual and group therapy that is in accordance to the rules and ethics of the state board. Once an assessment of the individual and/or family has been conducted, a treatment plan may be implemented by the therapist. Meticulous record keeping on patient assessments and progress on the implementation of treatment plans is a necessary.

Required Skills

  • The therapist must have an ability to drive to a variety of places and must hold a valid state driver's license. The nature of the occupation requires excellent communication skills and an ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals on a daily basis.

Education and Prior Work Experience

  • A masters degree in clinical or counseling psychology and two semesters of supervised clinical experience is required. A valid state license to practice psychology may be required depending on the employer. The requirements to obtain a state license vary by state, though the general requirements are a masters degree in psychology, two thousand hours of supervised clinical experience, a valid state driver's license and satisfactory completion of a criminal and professional background check.

Job Outlook

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a twelve percent job growth for psychologists for the 2008 to 2018 time period. Job opportunities will remain competitive as the supply of psychologists holding a masters degree is greater than the demand. Job prospects will be best for those holding a PhD in clinical or counseling psychology.

Salary

  • According to Indeed.com, the median salary for a mobile therapist is $84,000, as of April 2010.
