1998 GMC Jimmy Facts

In the 1990s and early 2000s, the sport utility vehicle became more popular than larger sedan models. Vehicle buyers felt safer inside bigger vehicles, and since manufacturers were able to provide the smaller ‘car-like’ experience to their SUV models, the SUV became a vehicle of choice. One such SUV was the 1998 GMC Jimmy manufactured by Chevrolet.

  1. History

    • The Jimmy model was originally created in 1994 to cash in on the growing popularity of the SUV. It did not sell well compared to some of its rivals, especially when compared to the Chevrolet Blazer. Still, the '98 Jimmy SUV remained strong enough to maintain its existence, while many other models from other companies slowly went down--especially in the late 1990s.

    Target Market

    • The 1998 GMC Jimmy targeted the married man or woman, considered a segment that needed enough room in a vehicle to support a family, while still needing to drive a small vehicle for convenience.

    Engine & Amenities

    • The standard '98 Jimmy had a 4.3 liter V-6 engine with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The inside featured reclining driver's and passenger's seats with manual lumbar supports and colored carpeting.

    The Look

    • GMC threw in a lot of new ideas for the ‘98 Jimmy to give it a more updated look. It had a new grill, headlamps, body-side moldings and bumpers compared to previous editions. GMC also included aluminum wheels to give it more appeal to consumers.

    Safety and Security

    • The ’98 Jimmy featured airbags for the driver and front-passenger side. It also had 4-wheel disc brakes with wheel anti-lock braking systems. Just as with other Chevrolet models, it also had a 24-hour roadside assistance program.

    Options

    • In an attempt to fit all budgets, the Jimmy was sold in four trims--the Jimmy SL 2-door (2WD); SLE 4-door (2WD); SL 2-door (4x4); and SLE 4-door (4x4). GMC also offered a wide-array of optional equipment for the ’98 Jimmy, including a power sunroof, sound system, and keyless entry feature.
