Gravedigger Job Description
Gravediggers need to be physically strong to complete their job. It is labor intensive, and sometimes, they are required to work extended hours. Generally, they must be an experienced equipment operator, and sometimes, on-the-job training is offered. A driver's license, work schedule flexibility and good written and verbal communication skills are needed.

This worker is frequently in contact with various people throughout the day. The job requires an ability to speak respectfully to others and to listen to requests and try to meet them. Empathy is also a good quality to have when interacting with mourners.
In general, the worker is expected to effectively manage relationships with other staff members, funeral directors, clergy, mourners and visitors. A positive and dignified attitude is expected at all times.
Grave Preparation Duties

One of the tasks associated with this job description is grave preparation. A worker must excavate graves mechanically and manually following all safety and health regulations. Grave preparation includes locating and marking the grave site; removing sod and excavating soil; placing and removing boards, struts and matting; and covering excavated soil. Funeral preparation tasks include positioning the casket lowering device, erecting canopies and arranging chairs. Post funeral activities involve lowering caskets, back filling dirt and positioning headstones.

Grounds Keeping

There are a vast number of grounds keeping tasks associated with this job description. Some include emptying trash, mowing grass, removing dead flowers and debris from graves, pruning shrubs and trimming trees. In order to complete these jobs, a gravedigger must be able to drive and operate equipment, such as a backhoe, tractor and various types of trucks, leaf blowers and weed eaters. In addition, skill with manual and power tools is needed.

Some of the other job requirements may involve experience in specific skill sets, such as carpenter skills to make wooden forms for concrete slabs or basic masonry skills for setting gravestones in concrete. The ability to repair mechanical equipment or power tools may also be needed. At the least, basic automotive care knowledge will be required to change tires and oil, check water levels and follow vehicle weight requirements.

Salary will range in payment depending on work experience, locale and number of hours worked. Most gravediggers are paid an hourly wage, but some are paid on salary. A gravedigger's annual income from this job will average from $30,000 to $60,000, depending on the factors mentioned; however, this quote is just an average--pay can be lower or higher.
