Wedding Director Vs. Wedding Coordinator
Weddings can be an overwhelming experience in event planning, which is why many couples decide to hire help to make sure the process runs smoother. Wedding coordinators and wedding directors are the two types of people who do this. Although these job titles are similar, their degree of involvement differs. Which type is best for each wedding depends on the couple's budget and desires.

Hiring Wedding Coordinator
-
Wedding coordinators are typically hired soon after the couple becomes engaged and begins planning the wedding. At this point, the wedding coordinator's pay rate is discussed and a contract may be entered into. Wedding coordinators sometimes charge a base fee or may have an escalating scale depending on what activities the couple would like help with. Wedding coordinators typically offer all services associated with the wedding imaginable and are there to do the legwork.
Hiring Wedding Director
-
If a couple decides that they do not need the help of a wedding coordinator, they may learn that they still need some assistance with the management of details as the wedding day approaches. In this case, they will hire a wedding director. The wedding director will facilitate the details, placement and timing of the wedding ceremony. This hiring is usually done within one month of the wedding day, after arrangements have been decided.

Duties
-
A wedding coordinator assumes all wedding planning duties that the couple requests her to. This can include picking the locations, calling to check available dates, recommending florists, photographers and bakeries and arranging for the payment for all of them. Wedding coordinators also help the engaged couple with the theme of the wedding and its decor.
In contrast, a wedding director only facilitates the details of the wedding day. In many cases, she only oversees the details of the ceremony. She ensures that bridesmaids and groomsmen walk in the ceremony at the appropriate time and keeps things going according to schedule. She may also facilitate the rehearsal the night before and instruct the wedding party on what they need to bring with them to the wedding and what time they need to be there.
Pay rates
-
Wedding coordinators typically charge a base fee that can be as little as $500 and go up to tens of thousands of dollars. This all depends on her activity with the wedding planning and her expected duties. In contrast, a wedding director's fee is sometimes included with facility rental and can cost up to $500.
Employment
-
Wedding coordinators work for private event planning firms, are self-employed or work for a facility. Wedding directors almost always work for the facility where the wedding is held, or they work for a church with frequent weddings.
